Easter Bouquet

Easter Egg Bouquet with Mudpies and SunshineI purchased some foam eggs and knew the girls would appreciate a laid back craft session in the lead up to Easter. This was essentially a free range collage session. The girls chose wool, confetti and fabric scraps as their decorating materials. Craft glue, glue stick glue and glue dots were the necessary tools.

Both girls started wrapping wool around an egg each whilst concentrating very hard. Wool just wants to slip right off the eggs so the wool had to be tied tight. We also used glue dots for the wool attached to the extremities of the egg.

They were very happy, busy with their glue and their materials.

With the confetti, Zoe just rubbed the glue stick all over the egg and rolled it in the confetti. Such a sticky and satisfying result!

The eggs were appropriately placed in egg cups while the glue dried… Collage Eggs drying in egg cups with Mudpies and Sunshine

Easter Bunny Card with Cardboard Tubes

Easter Bunny Card with Mudpies and Sunshine

We wanted to create some Easter cards for family using only cardboard tubes. Easter eggs seemed like a good idea but instead we wanted a bit more of a challenge…and after a bit of trial and error (on my part) our cute little Easter Bunny was born!

The credit for turning the two bottom circle prints into cute little rabbit paws goes to Ebony.

Step by step to create easter bunny card with Mudpies and Sunshine

I used only a small thumb length tube of acrylic paint for the stamping – with this type of craft a little bit of paint goes a long way.

Both of the girls enjoyed decorating the Easter Bunny and adding an Easter greeting. Ebony liked the “Hoppy Easter” pun, Zoe thought we should be using the traditional “Happy Easter”. Each to their own. For me not to use “Hoppy Easter” would be a waste of perfectly formed pun. But that’s just me ;)

Creating Easter Bunny Cards with Mudpies and Sunshine

Easter Bunny card collection with Mudpies and Sunshine

I’ll admit we have used a large amount of black pen. I think we may colour in some of the drawn Easter eggs to add a touch of colour to the front of the cards.

Are you getting into some Easter craft at the moment?

The girls have spent a whole weekend enjoying some Easter printables from Activity Village. Lots of easter crafts and printables on their fabulous website. Don’t forget to check out my Easter pinterest board – even more easter fun for kids.

Thanks so much for dropping by! And of course….Hoppy Easter!!

Wooden Peg People

Wooden Peg People with Mudpies and Sunshine

These lovely folk came about one afternoon when the girls were in the mood for a quiet sit down craft.  They started off with one each which quickly turned into five as they had more and more ideas.

Wooden Peg doll painting with Mudpies and Sunshine

Painting these lovely things requires the finest and smallest paint brushes, especially for any detailed bits and bobs.

Painting wooden peg people with Mudpies and Sunshine

The girls painted clowns, men, mermaids, a chef, a queen, a spy and themselves. Sorry to any peg person I couldn’t recognise or remember. Your value is not diminished if you don’t get a mention, it’s just that the girls aren’t here as I type this.

Painting Wooden Peg People with Mudpies and Sunshine (2)

The girls used small square glasses to rest their pegs on whilst waiting for them to dry. The glasses also made it easier to finish off painting each peg without having to smudge the wet parts of the peg that were already painted.

Painting Wooden Peg Dolls with mudpies and sunshine

This activity kept the girls engaged for much longer than I thought it would. They were creating people for themselves to play with so they spent alot of time thinking about who they wanted to play with and what they should look like. Lots of planning!

Now the wooden peg folk live in their rooms “resting” on the side of jars.  Zoe brings her people alive once she has gone into her room and the door is closed.

Ebony’s are hidden away somewhere secret. Away from little sister’s hands I should think. Doesn’t paint have such transformative powers?

If we didn’t have wooden pegs my next choice would have been plain popsticks or even toilet roll people. Both materials provide a blank canvas and a width to height ratio that easily transforms into bodies with heads, arms and legs.

A great indoor activity and perfect for a rainy day.

Valentines Egg Carton Craft Series

Valentines Egg Carton Craft Series with Mudpies and Sunshine - egg cartons

School is back for both my girls so we are doing things a little more slowly around here.  Not less craft, just more efficient craft. So to achieve some efficiency I decided that we would use two egg cartons to create 5 different craft activities. There might end up being more, who knows? I can always edit!

To start with and in keeping with the Valentines theme, I invited the girls to paint an egg carton each, anyway they liked – using pink and red paint.

Valentines Egg Carton Craft Series with Mudpies and Sunshine - painting stripes

If you have kids who love paint, then just being able to paint is an activity all of its own. Ebony was tired and found the painting relaxing…Zoe had a bit more energy and was thinking purely of decoration.

Paint, paint, paint. It’s a busy job this.

I love the preciseness of Ebony’s paintwork. She wasn’t going to just slap on the paint. Not when she found out the egg cartons were for a blog series ;)

The plan for the series is to use the egg cartons for lots of Valentine’s themed fun. And here they are, all dry and ready for action.

Are you going to join us on this craft series? If so, starting is easy. Paint, egg cartons and those crafty kids you’ve got.

The next post in this series will be posted here tomorrow – so stay tuned!

Valentine’s Pikelet Snack

Love Heart Valentine Pikelet Snack with Mudpies and Sunshine

How to make a love heart shaped pikelet when you don’t have a heart shaped cutter?

Call in the aluminium foil and get shaping! It’s easy – just rip off a 30cm piece and fold it over and over at a width of about 1.5cm – 2cms until you have something like this:-

Love Heart Pikelet Snack with Mudpies and Sunshine

Then fold the long piece of foil in half – it will look like this…

Love Heart Pikelet Snack with Mudpies and Sunshine 028

Very boring so far… until you fashion your alfoil into a beautiful heart shape :)

Love Heart Pikelet Snack with Mudpies and Sunshine made with aluminium foil

The part of the love heart where the two ends join is kept in place with a paper clip. Once that’s done it’s time to start cookin’.

Our pikelet recipe

Pikelet Recipe:

Sift flour and sugar together in a bowl and mix.

Combine egg and milk in a jug and whisk.

Whisk the wet and dry ingredients together. Melt a large knob of butter in a medium hot frying pan. Pour part of the pikelet mixture into the pan. When bubbles start to appear on the upper side of the pikelet, flip the pikelet and cook the opposite side for 30 seconds to a minute (or until golden brown). Remove from fry pan and place on paper towel which is resting on a plate.

Repeat until all the mixture has been used.

Please do melt some butter before you start. It does seem to make the pikelets taste better, even if you have a non-stick frypan.

Now grab your new heart-shaped foil. Place it in the pan and remind yourself how little this new accessory cost you ;)

Pour in some of the mixture, then keep an eye out for the bubbles.

Creating Art with Coloured Ice Cubes

Ice Creating Art with Coloured Ice Cubes with Mudpies and Sunshine

Playing with ice cubes is a perfect craft for the warm weather or for a themed winter activity. For us, it was the warm weather type.

The girls have been doing lots of chores and doing them well so I wanted to give them their chore money in a slightly fun, unconventional way.  All kids like something hidden and my two are no exception. They love hide and seek, hidden notes and generally anything involving hiding or a surprise.

So I hid some coins in the ice cubes. Oh the anticipation, it was almost too much for me. Anyway, let me back up a minute.

First things first. To make your coloured ice cubes (and it couldn’t be any easier) – pour food colouring and water in your choice of ice-cube tray. I placed the money in first and then added the water and colouring.

Creating Coloured Ice Cubes with Mudpies and Sunshine

I didn’t really have a “craft result” in mind with this activity. I just wanted the girls to choose how they wanted to play with the ice – that way they would get the most enjoyment out of it.

I supplied paper and two bowls – and the whole of the backyard. I said they could experiment on the deck (the part that gets rained on to help with the cleaning!).  I bought thin gloves as I knew Ebony doesn’t like getting food colouring on her hands. So both the girls wore the gloves, Zoe wore an old dress and Ebony wore one of our ‘art’ shirts.

I popped the ice cubes into a bowl before starting.

Coloured Ice Cube Fun with Mudpies and Sunshine

Straight away there were lots of “ooh sooo cold” and “look at this colour” and “mine is melting faster than yours”. So there was lots of experimenting and discovering. And dripping…

Coloured Ice Cube with Mudpies and Sunshine

With time ticking, they quickly got absorbed in the activity.

Ice Cube Painting with Mudpies and Sunshine

The bright colours were a delight.

Yay for finding money!

The girls also enjoyed playing with colour on the deck.  Zoe quickly discarded her gloves – red hands are all part of the ahem fun.

Ebony found ALL the money – then it was redistributed fairly :)

The food colouring does stain clothes and skin. However it does fade from the skin after a few washes.

Painting with Ice Cube Fun with Mudpies and Sunshine

Once the ice cubes in the bowl were almost liquid, the girls started experimenting by painting with rocks, leaves and their own hands.

Coloured Ice Cube Painting with Mudpies and Sunshine

Ice Cube Painting Station with Mudpies and Sunshine

This is such an easy activity to set up that we will have to do it again soon. The girls were fascinated by the melting, the colours and the new ways of creating art at each stage of the completely frozen to totally melted process.

The dried sheets of paper will make cute wrapping paper for little gifts too. With birthday season coming in this house we will definitely need them.

Garden Bells

Garden Bells with Mudpies and Sunshine

We made our own bells! And this post will show you how we made them, just as I promised to do in my previous post about our tin can percussion set.  The tin can music machine is outside in our mudpie corner as are two of the garden bells we made.

First up – here is what we used to make them:-

Making Bells with Mudpies and Sunshine

I had seen this post about Making Bells over at Happy Whimsical Hearts and I knew we had to make them too. The idea stayed in the back of my mind until I saw these three mini terracotta pots for 50c each at a local op shop.

We also used:

  • paint
  • mod podge (sealant)
  • tough string
  • colourful beads

Zoe volunteered to be the bell decorator.

Musical Garden Bells with Mudpies and Sunshine

Zoe was enjoying making new colours in the paint tray. Actually she got very excited about a new purple she had ‘invented’.

Musical Garden with Mudpies and Sunshine - Painting

Once the artwork was completed we had to give the bells a coat of sealant – we use Mod Podge – to protect the paint from the weather. Then once the sealant is dry it was time to add the string and the beads.

Musical Bells with Mudpies and Sunshine

The beads are used to keep the string in place by blocking the hole on the inside. Start with this bead and knot first.

Musical Bells in the Garden with Mudpies and Sunshine

I also used them as the noise maker for the bell ringing and as a place to hold on to when ringing the bell. Lots of knots required :) The large yellow, small pink and small orange beads in the middle below are for noise making. The big purple and small pink on the end are for grabbing ono (like an indicative handle).

Musical Garden Bells with Mudpies and Sunshine - Knots and Beads

I asked the girls where they would like the bells to be. They decided they wanted two at the mudpie corner – one for ringing on entry and one for ringing on exiting the mudpie corner. The other one was up to me!

Zoe was so excited when I told her that the bells were ready for ringing :)

Musical Garden with Mudpies and Sunshine = Bells and Tin cans

I cannot help but ring a bell every time I go past one. They are adding a little bit of ‘sunshine’ to our garden.  We had a visitor who learnt which bell was for what and quickly reminded me as I entered the mudpie corner which bell to ring on my way out. These bells are being taken seriously! Respect for the bells :)

Tin Can Percussion Set

Tin Can Percussion Set with Mudpies and Sunshine

I have been meaning to make something musical from our recycled tin cans and finally it happened!

We decided on 5 tin cans and Zoe chose the colours.

Tin Can Percussion Set with Mudpies and Sunshine

Zoe was also the master of the paint application. One coat of each was the preferred design.

Tin Can Music Garden with Mudpies and Sunshine

Then before we knew it, the painting job was done!

Painting Tin Cans for Music Garden - Mudpies and Sunshine

We wanted to add this tin can percussion set to our mudpie corner. In the last week we added a sheet of lattice, a grape-vine and mulch. The percussion set will be right next to that.

Once the paint had dried, I applied Mod Podge (sealant) to the cans so the rain won’t wash away all our lovely paint.

The next day, armed with my trusty tools of the trade…

Musical Garden with Mudpies and Sunshine

…I set to work. I pulled five wooden stakes out of the garden from plants and shrubs that no longer needed the assistance. So this creation is true recycling :)

I love how they are all at different heights.

If you’re in the mood for music after baking a few mudpies, then grab a spoon and a mini whisk…

…and have yourself some fun with recycled tin cans!

Zoe discovered that each of the cans sounds different when they’re hit. Making music becomes so much more enjoyable when there are different “notes” to use.  Zoe is making up her own song here…

Seeing how much Zoe is enjoying it makes me wish I’d made it sooner.

How to Make 3D Sparkly Cardboard Tube Snowflakes

How To Make 3D Sparkly Cardboard Tube Snowflakes with Mudpies and Sunshine

Winter is here! Well, not quite here. In fact, large parts of Australia are suffering through record-breaking hot weather. Yesterday at Oodnadatta in South Australia the temperature rose above 47 degrees (116 F). It was also the 10th consecutive day over 40 degrees (104F) in the town with more of the same forecast for the next seven days! There has never been a better reason to do snowflake craft!

What you need to make cardboard tube snowflakes:

  • cardboard tubes/toilet rolls
  • marker
  • scissors
  • white paint
  • silver glitter

How to make the snowflakes: Sparkly Cardboard Tube Snowflake Tutorial with Mudpies and Sunshine And, voila! 3D Cardboard Tube Snowflake

Once the cutting was completed, Ebony was ready to make the snowflakes sparkle! Decorating Station for 3DCardboard Tube Snowflake with Mudpies and Sunshine The methods we used were to cover the snowflake in white paint and then roll it in glitter OR once wet with paint, shake glitter all over the snowflake (and the tray, the tablecloth and the universe as we know it!). Sparkly Cardboard Tube Snowflakes with Mudpies and Sunshine - painting Lots of shaking, not so much rolling :)

Sparkly Cardboard Tube Snowflakes with Mudpies and Sunshine

Ebony loved making the snowflakes sparkle. White snowflakes are good too if you don’t feel like experiencing a glitter bomb going off in your house:) Indeed – make them any colour you wish.

I love the glitter sparkling in the window.

Cardboard Tube Snowflake Garland with Mudpies and Sunshine

You may choose to make only one snowflake or a whole crowd of them. The options for using the snowflakes are endless. We used ours to make a garland and next christmas we will make some more into ornaments.

Not much snow outside that window is there? :) But we’re fine with our indoor style snowflakes – making us feel a bit cooler in our winter wonderland.

Is it snowing where you are? If it is I would LOVE to hear from you and find out where you are. I promise I will show the girls where you and the snow are on our globe. You can contribute to their education! What better reason do you need to leave a quick comment? ;)

5 Essential Cooking Skills for Kids

5 Essential Cooking Skills for Kids - Mudpies and Sunshine

Today I am sharing 5 different cooking skills the girls learnt by preparing their own lunch (with a little help & supervision from me). It is school holiday time here and there are 6 weeks of them. So plenty of time for us to take our time and not rush the days away. It is the perfect time to learn new things around the home, at a relaxed, safe pace.

Today we made “Cheesy Baked Beans & Egg Bake” in individual ramekin dishes.

So easy and full of protein!

How to Make:

  1. Half fill a ramekin dish with baked beans.
  2. Crack an egg over the baked beans.
  3. Sprinkle a child’s handful of grated cheese over the top of the egg.
  4. Cook for 10 – 15 minutes in a moderate oven. (I cooked it until the cheese started browning).

The 5 skills relevant to the recipe are:

1. OPENING A RING PULL TIN CAN

Ring Pull Tin Can Practice - Mudpies and Sunshine

Ebony is 9 years old and who knows if she has the strength to open the baked beans can or not? I know she has found it too hard in the past, but maybe she is strong enough now. There is only one way to find out! She gave it a go and the answer is no-ish :) I had to pull it to the point it ‘gave way’ and then she could pull it back the rest of the way. She was happy with that!

2. WHAT TO DO WITH LEFTOVERS

The recipe doesn’t use all of the baked beans from the can. So what to do next? Leave it out for Mum or Dad? No! Find an empty container in the cupboard, empty the leftovers into the container and put it in the fridge. Place at the front of the fridge so it doesn’t get hidden at the back where it may start growing it’s own arms and legs.

5 Kids Cooking Essentials - Mudpies and Sunshine 056

3.RECYCLING

So the can is empty, now what? Time to wash out the can and put it in the recycling bin. Let’s see the job through from start to finish.

5 Kids Cooking Essentials - Mudpies and Sunshine 059

4. CRACKING AN EGG

My kids have been cracking eggs from a young age like most little tackers but I make sure they have lots of opportunity to do it as they still need practice. And they love doing it.

Normally I get them to crack the egg into a separate container so we can easily remove any egg shell with a spoon before it goes in with the main mixture.

Zoe, in particular, has really enjoyed getting better at cracking eggs. This time Zoe cracked her egg straight onto her baked beans with no shell. She was so proud of herself.

5 Kids Cooking Essentials - Mudpies and Sunshine 065

5.GRATING CHEESE

I have two lovely deep scars on my right index finger from getting distracted whilst grating cheese. Embarrassingly  I was well into my 20s on both occasions.  So my hope is that I might be able to prevent scarring my girls (in this way at least!) by getting them familiar with the cheese grater.

My advice for them is usually as follows: Fingers back. Hold the cheese or vegetable firmly. Hold the grater firmly. Don’t worry about grating right to the end – give your fingers a chance! Go slowly or at a medium pace – don’t rock the house with your grating, your knuckles will thank you for it.

So far – so good.

5 Kids Cooking Essentials - Mudpies and Sunshine 063

Ebony also switched on the oven and put the food into the oven. Both of these jobs require lots of safety awareness  - which I am not covering in this post but may do in a future post.  There are so many little steps in the preparation and consumption of food, it is important children are familiar with as many age-appropriate steps as possible. It might be harder to get them interested if it’s left until they are much older. They love to feel capable, independent and helpful. Food is essential to life, so knowing how to prepare food is essential!

And the finished product…

Cheesy Baked Bean and Egg Bake - 5 kid's cooking skills - Mudpies and Sunshine…accompanied well by toast soldiers. Yummo!

Does anyone have any cheese grater horror stories to share (to make me feel better)?

If not I’d love to hear about what your children like doing in the kitchen. Are they cooking up a storm or looking for your lolly stash like I used to? :)
