DIY Star Wars Wrapping Paper

All the boys we know from 4 to 44 seem to love Star Wars so we thought it would be handy to create some of own Star Wars wrapping paper.

Firstly I found a darth vader mask courtesy of Katydidcreativity, cut out the outline of the mask and taped up the edge.

I cut out around the mask, left a small border and voila – a darth vader mask stencil. Because the mask stencils will be black I chose our stock of brown paper instead of a lighter colour.

After we’d finished the stencilling I searched the google universe and found this super star wars font. It is free to download from here. Once I found it, I just had to use it:)

Zoe told me that she thought the wrapping paper looked “a little bit spooky”. Success!

I think a green yoda stencil is definitely on the cards for next time. Those big ears and round head are really too cute.

If you think you might use this idea for the star wars fans in your life I would love to hear about it!

Thanks so much for dropping by!

DIY Sparkly Christmas Wrapping Paper

Xmas paper 1

Welcome to another DIY wrapping paper post in our series. This is the 6th one!

For this post, we needed more wrapping paper for our little salt dough ornaments we made recently to give to teachers and family. Preparing for this craft is quick and easy, just how I like it :) We needed a lot of wrapping paper so I had both girls set up at the table. Ebony with red paint and a star cookie cutter and Zoe with green paint and a Christmas tree cutter.

Ebony enjoyed the look of the bright red star against the soft brown paper. Zoe unfortunately discovered her christmas tree cutter was slightly bent and wouldn’t make a good impression when stamped. We swapped it for an angel and then she used the star as well. It’s good to know I am teaching her about adapting to change (and disappointment!).Christmas paper & playdoh Dec 2012 014

We raided our glitter box in order to add some christmas sparkle to the paper. Paste on some glue…

And shake it, shake it, shake it…

Zoe used the multi-coloured glitter on quite a few of her shapes. I love how big the glitter pieces are.

Are the 25 days in December really enough to get all the crafting done you want to do? Of course not! But we must try :)

If you are interested in more Christmas themed wrapping paper (understandable with only 15 days to go, or so I was told at 6.30am this morning) you might like our DIY reindeer wrapping paper. Zoe had lots of fun stamping the reindeer antlers.

Thanks so much for dropping by!

DIY Rudolph Christmas Wrapping Paper

Oh how I love Christmas. Christmas craft can not come early enough for me. So I am delighted to add another Christmas craft post to the blog. We have been busy with Christmas card craft, using cork stamps and pipe cleaners and pom poms (which I am planning to post about very soon!). Sign up to the blog and you won’t miss a thing :)

This time we are making our own Christmas themed wrapping paper – Rudolph takes centre stage in this craft.

We needed these items to get started:-

Other items you will need:

  • cake fork or small fork
  • large piece of plain paper
  • black, red and brown paint
  • small child who loves paint
  • (we used the bottom of a lipstick pen (love secret santas) for the eye stamping)

Once we had all of the above assembled, our small child started having lots of fun stamping:

What is going on with those reindeer antlers? Yup – fork stamping. Sounds illegal but it isn’t. Anybody who loves Christmas can give it a go.

With three different actions required for this craft it gives little ones lots to concentrate on. They also need to think spatially because Rudolph needs adequate space for the antlers. Especially if they want to start with the nose and eyes like Zoe did.

This requirement can also lead to some interesting problem solving. Didn’t leave enough room for big antlers? Not a problem when you’re creating baby reindeer – ta da!

Zoe stamped away happily for quite some time.

Lots of reindeer here with very cute big red noses. Is it Rudolph and his extended family? Zoe said “it is the school where reindeers with noses go”. All eyes to the front!

Zoe also thought this paper says “boy present” more than it says “girl present”. I agreed.

So we wrapped up a Christmas present for our nearly 5-year-old nephew and cousin.

What could be inside?

So that is one present wrapped and ready to go. Thanks for dropping by and catching up on our Christmas preparations.

How are your Christmas preparations going?

DIY Wrapping Paper – Initial Stamping

Welcome to the fourth DIY wrapping paper craft in our series. I have created this as a series because it is one of my quick go-to crafts. So quick and easy to set up.

So far we have had lots of fun making wrapping paper in the following ways:

This post is about personalising the wrapping paper and using the recipient’s initial as a stamp. In this case, Ebony was making wrapping paper for her friend’s 10th birthday. 10th birthdays are very special aren’t they?

First up I drew the outline of a “K” onto a household sponge and then cut out the shape.

Image

Ebony helped me lay out the paper and paints and then she was ready to start.

Image

Ebony was intriguied with the squishy feel of the paint and sponge combination. Even though she knew it would be squishy theoretically, it was not until she was doing it practically that her senses were completely appreciating it. I loved watching her enjoying it so much.

Image

Ebony was fascinated by the bubbles and holes appearing in the stamp. It was at this stage Ebony decided to add some purple along with the pink.

Image

Backwards and forwards – it’s all art!

Image

Trying to fill those gaps and experimenting with purple on pink.

Image

A happy little vegemite pleased with the results.

Image

Ebony asked if she could do another one for a different friend’s 10th birthday. Well of course I said “yes”. Initial “M” here we come!

Image

And the final product :-

Ready to go and par-tay!

Next up we will be doing more Christmas card craft, this time with pipe cleaners and pom poms - stay tuned and thanks for dropping by!

DIY Wrapping Paper #3 – Lego Fun

Why buy wrapping paper when the kids can have fun making it? It means so much to the recipient, especially when the wrapping paper has been decorated to their style :)

So far in this series we have been stamping with duplo blocks and string; and creating hearts with toilet paper rolls. It’s been frugal and it’s been fun.

For this wrapping paper we were inspired by a little boys’ love for Lego. Zoe was invited to a classmate’s 7th birthday party. A classmate who loved Lego.

No prizes for guessing how we decided to decorate his wrapping paper. Here is our preparation photo nonetheless:

Image

I opted for a few different types of Lego to make it a more interesting stamping activity.

Image

Zoe was happy to get started – she had a ton of ‘impatient birthday waiting’ energy at her disposal.

Image

Zoe was so delighted that she would be painting with wheels, lego wheels. She HAD to start with them first.

Image

“Look Mum – look at the wheel prints.”

Image

Zoe was really fascinated by all the different patterns the lego was creating.

Image

After the little wheels and lego block stamping, Zoe found true love with the big wheel. A few stamps lying on it’s side then:

Image

..roll that baby!

Image

Weeeeeee!

Image

Still loving that wheel.

Image

Back to the little wheels:

Image

Zoe kept this up for ages. Much more fun than going shopping for wrapping paper.

Image

I think she would have kept going until her arm fell off. Luckily the paint source ran out as the last gaps on the paper were being filled with Zoe’s enthusiastic stamping.

Image

And the final product. Wrapped around a nice little Lego toy on the inside. Apparently the Lego wrapping was well received. Zoe’s voice was full of pride when she told me how the birthday boy’s Dad had expressed delight in her homemade Lego wrapping paper. Nice one C’s Dad :)

Next time we talk wrapping paper, we will be posting about wrapping we made for a lovely young lady’s 10th birthday.

Thanks for dropping by!

DIY Love Heart Wrapping Paper

DIY Heart Wrapping Paper

This is another frugal wrapping paper activity. The best kind! Utilising one of the most familiar household items – the toilet paper roll.

The girls really enjoyed this – it is always fun for them to see how we can re-purpose everyday things into FUN craft activities.

Last time we used yarn and duplo blocks to make some stripey patterned wrapping paper which you can read about here.

To make the heart wrapping paper we used:

  1. 1 toilet roll/cardboard tube
  2. paint for stamping
  3. large pieces of heavy blank paper (we used IKEA paper that is sold in rolls)
  4. a palette of water colour paints

The stamp making is like watching magic in action. In only a few seconds you can shape the end of the roll into a love heart. It is really easy.

First, push down on the roll, for the whole length of the roll. This helps keep the love heart shape in place.

Image

Then adjust the end you are using for the stamp into the style of heart you prefer.

Image

Once the stamp was made, I invited the girls to sit down at the table and start stamping.

The girls decided that Ebony would do all the stamping and Zoe would do the ‘painting in’.

Ebony was determined to fill in all the gaps. Typical first child behaviour :)

Image

Once the heart outlines were dry, Zoe came to the table and starting painting the inside of the heart shapes. Zoe did lots of blue to start with as this particular paper was for Daddy and his favourite colour is…yup, blue.

I think the paper looks gorgeous.

Image

Next time I will remember to take a photo of a present wrapped in the pretty wrapping paper :) The presents did look adorable and Daddy was very impressed.

I hope you enjoyed this craft. If you did I would love for you to share it or to hear from you in the comments below. As always, thanks so much for dropping by.

The next edition of the DIY wrapping paper series will be all about Christmas. Can’t wait, I LOVE Christmas.

DIY Pretty Wrapping Paper #1 – Duplo blocks and string

Art is wonderful for art’s sake.

Art is also wonderful if you can use it.

We love making our own decorative wrapping paper around here. It serves quite a few purposes :

  • it has a personal touch
  • it gets the kids engaged in craft
  • it helps the kids get excited about the special person’s celebration
  • kids feel a sense of ownership when they contribute to a present
  • I see lots of love going into my girl’s efforts when we make wrapping paper which makes me smile the most.

We create our own decorated wrapping paper in lots of ways.

Today we will look at our latest efforts.

We used :

  • butchers paper
  • large duplo blocks
  • yarn/string
  • paint

Firstly I invited the girls to wrap some yarn in a haphazard way, round and round one large duplo block each. These blocks are perfect for this task as the crevices between the bumps hold the yarn nicely in place.

Next they dipped the flat side of duplo block into a prepared paint tray and started stamping away!

Here is Zoe showing us her stamping block.

Image

Ebony made her paper with pink paint. Pink for girls, blue for boys. That’s how black and white things are when you are under 10.

Image

There was alot of paper to cover. I had at least two cups of tea while they did this craft ;)

Image

Both girls had lots of fun and were very proud of their artwork. Here is the finished blue paper:-

In my next wrapping paper post we will be using toilet rolls. Fun and cheap :)

Thanks for visiting and leave a comment if you wish.
