How to Make 3D Sparkly Cardboard Tube Snowflakes

How To Make 3D Sparkly Cardboard Tube Snowflakes with Mudpies and Sunshine

Winter is here! Well, not quite here. In fact, large parts of Australia are suffering through record-breaking hot weather. Yesterday at Oodnadatta in South Australia the temperature rose above 47 degrees (116 F). It was also the 10th consecutive day over 40 degrees (104F) in the town with more of the same forecast for the next seven days! There has never been a better reason to do snowflake craft!

What you need to make cardboard tube snowflakes:

  • cardboard tubes/toilet rolls
  • marker
  • scissors
  • white paint
  • silver glitter

Once the cutting was completed, Ebony was ready to make the snowflakes sparkle! Decorating Station for 3DCardboard Tube Snowflake with Mudpies and Sunshine The methods we used were to cover the snowflake in white paint and then roll it in glitter OR once wet with paint, shake glitter all over the snowflake (and the tray, the tablecloth and the universe as we know it!). Sparkly Cardboard Tube Snowflakes with Mudpies and Sunshine - painting Lots of shaking, not so much rolling :)

Ebony loved making the snowflakes sparkle. White snowflakes are good too if you don’t feel like experiencing a glitter bomb going off in your house:) Indeed – make them any colour you wish.

I love the glitter sparkling in the window.

Cardboard Tube Snowflake Garland with Mudpies and Sunshine

You may choose to make only one snowflake or a whole crowd of them. The options for using the snowflakes are endless. We used ours to make a garland and next christmas we will make some more into ornaments.

Not much snow outside that window is there? :) But we’re fine with our indoor style snowflakes – making us feel a bit cooler in our winter wonderland.

Is it snowing where you are? If it is I would LOVE to hear from you and find out where you are. I promise I will show the girls where you and the snow are on our globe. You can contribute to their education! What better reason do you need to leave a quick comment? ;)

6 Fun Ways to Recycle Christmas Cards

Recycling beautiful christmas cards into beautiful craft is a great way to be frugal, fun and environmentally responsible all at the same time.  All the christmas cards we received are going to be used for christmas craft next year. I can hardly wait ;)

I decided on 6 fun crafts that the girls might like to do next year and printed out these labels:-

Recycling Christmas Cards with Mudpies and Sunshine

The 6 fun ways to recycle christmas cards we chose are:

  1. Make gift tags
  2. Make a bauble garland
  3. Make a christmas card jigsaw (I am putting six cards in cut into 5 or 6 pieces each. Suitable for a quiet night time activity. )
  4. Make christmas tree cards
  5. Make a christmas garland
  6. Make miniature christmas boxes (I also printed off a page of instructions so I wouldn’t have to find it next year. Here is the link to the instructions we will be using from Kinderart). Activity Village has a huge list of recycling ideas. They are very clever people!

I stuck the labels onto plain brown lunch bags and then sorted through the christmas cards and decided which cards suited which task best. 6 Fun Ways to Recycle Christmas Cards - setup - Mudpies and Sunshine

I decided the christmas mobile would be Santa themed so most of the lovely Santa cards went into that bag. I also chose green themed cards for the christmas tree card craft.

6 Fun Ways to Recycle Christmas Cards - Mudpies and Sunshine - Christmas tree card craftI ran out of cards to place in the bauble garland bag and recycled some strong christmas paper instead: 6 Fun Ways to Recycle Christmas Cards - Mudpies and Sunshine 019

So here are the craft bags – all complete and ready to go for christmas 2013. And the contents we were gifted! Yay :)  6 Fun Ways to Recycle Christmas Cards - Mudpies and Sunshine

Creating with Eye Droppers

We were supposed to be using eye droppers and green coloured water to create some green paper…however Zoe had arrived at the craft site before I had finished setting up and she decided that dropping the water straight onto the aluminum foil was cool fun and the craft du jour.

Simple coloured water designs - Mudpies and Sunshine 059I also gave the water a Christmas touch by adding peppermint essence. As soon as the girls smelt it they said “ooh it smells like candy canes!”.

Simple coloured water designs - Mudpies and Sunshine 062After a while Zoe declared she had created “the world”.

Simple coloured water designs - Mudpies and Sunshine 089Ebony didn’t want to miss out on all the fun so I set her up with scented red water…

Simple coloured water designs - Mudpies and Sunshine 104Ebony spent 20 minutes having fun with her red water and foil tray. She is making a candy cane here.

So simple and easy to set up – and it was all Zoe’s idea! Such a great little activity to fit in between all the last minute chaos of christmas. Something with no prescribed outcome or rules. Just gentle play and as it happened, lots of quiet concentration.

If you try this out, please leave me a little comment as I would love to hear all about it.

Christmas Cookies

Christmas baking is always on our christmas agenda and this year both girls have asked to make biscuits to share with us and their grandparents on Christmas Day.

Ebony has already made crunchy chocolate biscuits all by herself. Our elf on the shelf got into the biscuit barrell and took a bite the other night – naughty Bimmy!

Zoe wanted to make the biscuit recipe she found in a Christmas activity book that a close family friend (thanks Ann!) bought her. It’s called “The Night before Christmas Sticker and Activity Book” published by Hinkler Books.

Here is the recipe:

CHRISTMAS COOKIES

Ingredients

  • 1 cup icing sugar, sieved
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 cup or 225g/8oz butter, cut into cubes
  • 31/2 cups or 350g/14oz plain flour, sieved

To decorate

  • 250g, 10oz or 2 cups of icing sugar, sieved
  • Edible gold and silver balls (we had none and used sprinkles)
  • Food colouring

Method

  • Line two baking trays with non-stick baking paper
  • Put the icing sugar, vanilla extract, egg yolk and butter into a mixing bowl and beat together until the mixture is smooth.
  • Add the flour and mix to a firm dough (we had to add a teeny amount of water)
  • Shape the dough into two flat discs and wrap in cling film. Put them into the refrigerator for 20 to 30 mins.
  • Preheat the oven to 375F, 190C or Gas Mark 5.
  • Roll the dough on a lightly-floured surface, until one finger thick.
  • Press out your Christmas shapes using your cutters.
  • Place on baking trays and bake for 10-12 minutes until lightly golden.
  • Put the cookies onto a wire rack to cool.
  • Mix the icing sugar with a few drops of cold water and food colouring to make a thick, but still runny icing.
  • Spread the icing over the cooled biscuits and decorate!

Zoe could not wait to get started. She measured out the butter, chopped it into cubes and then…totally freaked out using the electric beaters, poor thing. The butter was still too hard and it felt like she couldn’t control it. I had to share this photo as it shows just how tough life can be for kids in the first world ;)

This recipe is great for encouraging or helping to establish perserverance in young children. Really, I’m serious! There are so many steps to this recipe, including an agonising 30 minute wait while the dough firms up in the fridge.  But with eating and decorating an absolute given it seemed Zoe could have waited a decade. Zoe’s smile returned for the sifting.Christmas Cookies with Mudpies and Sunshine 007

Here are some out of the oven and the activity book recipe:)

Once all the cookies were cooked and cooled we got on with the business of decorating. I think the pictures tell the story here.

Christmas Cookies with Mudpies and Sunshine 046

Christmas Cookies with Mudpies and Sunshine 057Christmas Cookies with Mudpies and Sunshine 062The fun of decorating is not to be understated. Ebony asked if she could join in and Zoe was happy to say ‘yes’. I didn’t say a word about what type/style/method/colours and I didn’t need to. Zoe wanted red and green (we used pink instead of red) icing and then she went on her merry (christmas) way. By the way – you can’t have too many sprinkles!!

Another tradition we have is watching Mr Bean’s Christmas movie every year. The girls love it and it is quite a short movie at under 30 minutes so good for tired nights. Here is the youtube link:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGh64aODJQ0

Fun Foam Bookmark Gifts

We love a handmade gift around here. I have always encouraged the girls to make presents for each other instead of buying them. So far, so good :) In case you missed it, Ebony made these adorable little creatures for Zoe this year. Now it was Zoe’s turn to make something for Ebony.

We used:

  • foam sheets
  • glitter stickers
  • waxed cotton thread
  • wooden beads

Image

I had foam leftover from making the christmas themed bath activity and couldn’t wait to use it again.

We hid Zoe away from Ebony and she quickly got to work. She decided Ebony would love three bookmarks.

Image

Image

The bead work gave her some threading and knotting to do.Image

Zoe LOVED choosing the bead colours. She also constantly enjoyed yelling out to Ebony “not to come in!!”.

Zoe was very proud of her creations, reinforcing the idea that gifts do not need to be shop bought. The feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment at making a beautiful present was evident as well. Do we remember to brush hair around here? Not much it seems :)

Ebony will love these bookmarks – she is a huge bookworm and will love that they were made especially for her by little sis.

Wrapping and Giving

The Gift of Giving

Like many other parents I want to raise my girls to be compassionate. I want to open their eyes to the differences in the world and for them to understand how very, very lucky they are. So this year we are giving wrapped gifts to the Salvation Army to distribute to families with young children. We are also giving some of the gifts to the local hospital on Christmas Eve – for the children who come into the hospital over Christmas or who are already there.

Wrapping Station

It was going to be a long job, we had lots of presents to wrap. I know the girls have found wrapping presents fiddly and frustrating in the past so I wanted the wrapping ‘station’ to look inviting! Hence the rugs and the tinsel :) As for the gifts: we had sweet little animal finger puppets; pirate and princess writing slates; felt tiara decorating kits; bead necklace kits and velcro bracelets. Things to keep little hands and minds busy and small enough to carry around.

Wrapping Presents with Mudpies and Sunshine 013

It was the afternoon after the last day of school so I was pleasantly surprised at how enthusiastic and energetic the girls were. They really wanted to do it all themselves. Zoe wanted tips on how to hold the folded paper in place and remove a piece of sticky tape at the same time. Lots of fine motor skills called on for this job.

Wrapping Presents with Mudpies and Sunshine 024

On an emotional level, I saw how useful and helpful the girls felt. It is hard for children to know about other people in the world struggling and not be able to do anything about it. Wrapping and giving the presents made them feel like they have taken action. The only negative talk was the frustration of not being good at something as quickly as you would like ie. wrapping neatly like grown-ups. Ah it is always so satisfying when I can give the girls the chance to struggle through something on their own – and then see them come out the other side through their own efforts.

Wrapping Presents with Mudpies and Sunshine 062

Ebony was really happy with how much her wrapping improved in this one wrapping session. She was worried the recipients would be unimpressed with her wrapping. I asked her if she has ever worried or judged the wrapping style of presents she has received? She only had to give that question a second’s thought. Problem solved!

Wrapping Presents with Mudpies and Sunshine 067

Ebony liked being in charge of the cutting. It didn’t last though – Zoe loves cutting too, although she did find the large rolls quite hard work and handed the big scissors back to her big sister.

Wrapping Presents with Mudpies and Sunshine 079

We separated the presents into piles for girls and boys. Later on Zoe stuck pink star stickers on the girls presents and blue star stickers on the presents for boys. See the little round present on the top of the table? That is Zoe’s creation. It is wrapping paper scrunched up like a ball. She said “I think a little boy would like this to throw around”.

The Good Stuff

Ebony said that wrapping the presents was the best thing to do after the last day of school and she gave me a hug. Zoe wanted to do more wrapping after we had finished and asked if this was enough for all the kids who need presents? I think we will make this a ‘last day of school’ tradition.  We took half of the presents and some non-perishable food to the local Salvo Army centre yesterday. The people there were great with the girls and told them the presents would make lots of children smile this Christmas. They feel like they are making a difference and they are. Every little bit helps.

Now they are excited about our hospital delivery scheduled for Christmas Eve. For obvious reasons we are giving the presents to the admissions staff to distribute as they see fit.  We can’t wait.

Santa’s Sleigh Pretend Play

Santa's Sleigh Pretend Play with Mudpies and Sunshine

Ever wanted to be Santa for a day?? Have you ever imagined delivering presents to all the girls and boys all over the world – in the sleigh with the reindeer and sackful of presents?

Well strap yourselves in. Santa has the night off and two very lucky girls have been given this monumental and important task – full of magic and complicated logistics. Will they be up to the job? Read on to find out!

Warning:- There are 3 trillion photographs in this post. I couldn’t choose between them so I used them all! The girls were having such a good time – I really wanted that to resonate in this post to encourage more people to give this a go!

While the girls were at school I prepared the whole scene. For the sleigh I upturned our coffee table, used a small round red rug for the floor, had the santa hats ready, used baubles as decorations and/or dashboard instruments, filled a santa sack with wrapped presents, used tinsel as decorations and the reins and of course introduced some of our teddy population to the terrific task of pulling the sleigh.

Santa's Delivery 002

I also created two ‘homes’ for the girls to deliver presents to. It was bunny’s house on the green sofa (and his santa sack at the end of his bed – not proportional but useful nonetheless!).

Is he awake or asleep?  I never can tell :)
Santa's Delivery 013

Little kangaroo’s house was set up on the biege sofa. All in bed and waiting for Christmas morning.

Santa's Delivery 017

Needless to say, the girls had a blast. They fit together in the sleigh beautifully and absolutely loved being in charge of Christmas!
Santa's Delivery 191

There were a lot of fun times driving the sleigh to all it’s important destinations!

The girls were so happy to be able to step into Santa’s shoes and actually deliver presents.

Finding the food that bunny and kangaroo left out for Santa was an added bonus which no present delivery should be without! Below Zoe is reading from a pretend note that was left for (her) Santa. Something about how much bunny loves Santa and what she would love for Christmas.

Santa's Delivery 096

After they had eaten there was one more surprise – they could open one of the presents each. Ebony was canny enough to know it must be the ones without labels or tags.. Christmas Books

Two more books to add the Christmas book display.

Once the books were opened the sleigh became the place to be to read, to play and to deliver presents all over again. In fact four days on the sleigh is still in the middle of our lounge room and Zoe has asked every night if the sleigh can stay for another day :) Santa's Delivery 169

Sleigh Pretend Play Mudpies and Sunshine

All reindeer’s need their sleep so it’s nice to be tucked in by someone who loves you! Zoe just loves it. I think it helps her cope with all the waiting!

I wonder how long the sleigh will be taking pride of place in our lounge room? I have a feeling we will only get our coffee table back on Christmas Day.

I hope your Christmas preparations are going well. Thanks so much for dropping by!

A Quiet Christmas Corner

Christmas time generally means a lot of hustle and bustle. Kids are getting worn out by the combination of the end of the school year and the beginning of the warmer weather. Concerts, graduations, finishing projects, shopping, bbqs – the list goes on.

So you know where I’m taking you right?

You guessed it. All the way to our quiet christmas corner. A place where you can still love Christmas – but a place where you can do it quietly.

Image

The quiet corner consists of:

  • a felt christmas tree that can be decorated over and over again
  • a book display stand filled with christmas books (The quiet corner is our normal book corner with extras. Every year the old books are taken out of the display case and the christmas books fill the spaces instead.)
  • our one and only favourite christmas puzzle
  • two (one each) christmas activity books and markers Image

The girls have spent a lot of time in the quiet corner. The books are looked at and read the most but for today the winner was the jigsaw. We have had it for three years and it is still going strong (if not a little creased here and there). Zoe is so familiar with the puzzle it has become a meditative activity that just happens to be fun and about Christmas!

The secret to our quiet corner is that we don’t call it the quiet corner. We call it the ‘Christmas Book Corner’. No need to be asking for trouble!

I love the corner and will be sad to see it go when the time comes. But that’s what makes it special – it’s only here for a short time.

I hope you and your family are having a wonderful weekend.

Tanned Aussie Pikelet Snowman

When snowmen visit Australia at christmas time they always manage to get quite a tan.Image

I used egg rings to cook the pikelets and scrounged around the pantry to find a suitable hat (cheese), buttons (choc chips), arms (bran sticks) and eyes/scarf (sultanas).Image

Zoe was busy elsewhere while Ebony quickly brought her snowman to life. I love how Ebony made the arms by sticking the bran sticks into the snowman.Image

Juicy sultana-scarf :)  Image

Zoe couldn’t stay away for too long. They say the proof is in the tastin’. Snowman & Foam Tree Dec 2012 038

These thicker, chunkier pikelets are delicious. (Of course I had to try some to make sure they weren’t poisonous – if you thought that was a weak joke, blame my Dad:)). We definitely love these type of pikelets the best, especially after our first go at making them into christmas themed shapes (where you can find our pikelet recipe).

This was an easy, simple activity that doubled as an after school snack. I am nothing if not efficient!
