9 New Year’s Eve Goodie Bags Ideas

As I said in a recent post, I love Liz at Hoosier Homemade’s  New Year’s Eve countdown goodie bags.  The idea is to give your children a goodie bag on the hour leading up til “midnight” (or 8pm as it will be here for our tired kiddies). We are starting the bags at 12 pm so there will be 9 altogether.

Here is a picture of our bags – if you would like the clock face picture you can use it for free from here. I just hand drew on the relevant hours after I had printed off the 9 copies I required.  9 New Year's Goodie Bag Ideas with Mudpies and Sunshine

Here is what we’ve decided to include in our bags:-

1. Get creating with a party hat station @ 12pm. Inspired by this idea from the ladies at Hostess with the Mostess. We don’t have party hats in the house and instead of buying some I thought we could add to the fun by making our own from newspaper. We will be guided by the faithful hand of Cindy from Skip To My Lou.

2.  New Year’s Garland @ 1pm- everything the kids will need to make a sparkly new year’s garland – we’re using left-over sparkly christmas tinsel and black cardboard for a striking sparkly look.

3. Fun with word searches, puzzles and colouring-in printables @ 2pm – all 2013 themed  and all from activity village – we love activity village around here, they will save you on a rainy day, guaranteed!

New Year's Goodie Bag Activity Ideas MUDPIES AND SUNSHINE

Following on from there we have:

Fun New Year's Goodie Bag Activity Ideas with Mudpies and Sunshine

4. Decorate a memory jar @ 3pm – the girls can choose a 2013 outline to colour, then cut out and stick to the jar and then decorate with star stickers. The jar is for writing special memories and events that happen throughout 2013. And then we will all open the jar and read them out next New Year’s Eve.

5. Making some fun resolutions @ 4pm – Activity Village have a fun resolution story to fill out and also a sweet star print out for new year’s wishes. I’m not sure the girls are old enough to make year long promises just yet so these are a great alternative!

6. Whipped Cream Fun @ 5pm – Whipped cream in a bottle is a great novelty item and my kids love it! So we are having whipped cream & strawberries and whipped cream in a spider (which is a kids drink that combines fizzy drink and icecream). I plan to let the girls add whipped cream to the top and then sprinkle with sprinkles!.

7. Open ended 2013 Creation @ 6pm – each of the girls will get one part of the huge 2013 outline I drew on construction paper. They can choose whether they want to paint, colour, make a collage or all three! At the end we will stick it together and display it.

8. Create some noise makers @ 7pm – there are so many ways to create your own noise makers. I thought we could use some of tin cans from our stockpile. We will fill them with colourful beads and decorate them. To add to the cacophany we will probably get out some pots and pans as well:)

Crazy Photos and Sparklers MUDPIES AND SUNSHINE

9. Woohoo! Sparklers and crazy photos @ 8pm - both of the girls have robust little digital cameras and love using them. They also love sparklers so this is a perfect fun way for us to help the girls celebrate the new year. We will also be wearing the neon bracelets that are sold in the party section at the supermarket.

There was some talk of us putting a lolly or two is 9 blown up balloons and adding them to the countdown but no-one is quite sure if that is definitely happening (=none of the grown ups wants that job!). Counting down by popping balloons instead of using the goodie bag is another option which I discovered over at HowDoesShe. Great idea which we wanted to tweak and use lollies in addition to the bags.

A special note to make here :- most of the activities won’t fit into the brown lunch bags of course so I am writing the activity on paper and having the activities ready to go “behind the scenes”. As the girls read the activity out I will be ready with a “tah-dah”!!

I hope your visit here has inspired you to incorporate some DIY craft fun in to New Year’s Eve. I also have a huge round up of news year’s craft ideas over at pinterest. If you are featured and would like to grab a Mudpies and Sunshine button you will find them here. I wish you all health, happiness and peace for the new year. Thank you very much for visiting and supporting my blog. Best new year’s wishes Nicole x

DIY Star Wars Wrapping Paper

All the boys we know from 4 to 44 seem to love Star Wars so we thought it would be handy to create some of own Star Wars wrapping paper.

DIY Easy Star Wars Wrapping Paper - MUDPIES AND SUNSHINE

Firstly I found a darth vader mask courtesy of Katydidcreativity, cut out the outline of the mask and taped up the edge.

I cut out around the mask, left a small border and voila – a darth vader mask stencil. Because the mask stencils will be black I chose our stock of brown paper instead of a lighter colour.

After we’d finished the stencilling I searched the google universe and found this super star wars font. It is free to download from here. Once I found it, I just had to use it:)

Zoe told me that she thought the wrapping paper looked “a little bit spooky”. Success!

I think a green yoda stencil is definitely on the cards for next time. Those big ears and round head are really too cute.

If you think you might use this idea for the star wars fans in your life I would love to hear about it!

6 Fun Ways to Recycle Christmas Cards

Recycling beautiful christmas cards into beautiful craft is a great way to be frugal, fun and environmentally responsible all at the same time.  All the christmas cards we received are going to be used for christmas craft next year. I can hardly wait ;)

I decided on 6 fun crafts that the girls might like to do next year and printed out these labels:-

Recycling Christmas Cards with Mudpies and Sunshine

The 6 fun ways to recycle christmas cards we chose are:

  1. Make gift tags
  2. Make a bauble garland
  3. Make a christmas card jigsaw (I am putting six cards in cut into 5 or 6 pieces each. Suitable for a quiet night time activity. )
  4. Make christmas tree cards
  5. Make a christmas garland
  6. Make miniature christmas boxes (I also printed off a page of instructions so I wouldn’t have to find it next year. Here is the link to the instructions we will be using from Kinderart). Activity Village has a huge list of recycling ideas. They are very clever people!

I stuck the labels onto plain brown lunch bags and then sorted through the christmas cards and decided which cards suited which task best. 6 Fun Ways to Recycle Christmas Cards - setup - Mudpies and Sunshine

I decided the christmas mobile would be Santa themed so most of the lovely Santa cards went into that bag. I also chose green themed cards for the christmas tree card craft.

6 Fun Ways to Recycle Christmas Cards - Mudpies and Sunshine - Christmas tree card craftI ran out of cards to place in the bauble garland bag and recycled some strong christmas paper instead: 6 Fun Ways to Recycle Christmas Cards - Mudpies and Sunshine 019

12 New Year’s Activities

Christmas is over! We had a wonderful day and we’re all a bit sad to say goodbye to Christmas for another year. However boxing day means New Year’s is fast approaching. Since we are saying goodbye to 2012 I thought 12 ideas for new year’s kids fun would be appropriate! Thanks so much for all the clever and fun ideas I have featured here from other bloggers.

1. Goodie Bags – something we will definitely be doing this year is this simple and brilliant idea from Liz at Hoosier Homemade : New Year’s Eve countdown goodie bags. Perfect for keeping the kids interested during the long hours til midnight! It has been a popular pin on pinterest – and rightly so!

New-Years-Countdown-Bags

2. So what to put in the New Year’s Eve countdown goodie bags? Well I found an adorable list of things to do on New Year’s with kids over at  Hip Hip Hooray blog, including setting up camp indoors (if it’s cold outside), playing boardgames and letting the kids make their own confetti with hole punches. All great ideas – but my favourite (it’s been a favourite on a alot of blogs for a reason) was new year’s bingo! (I have linked to the free bingo printable and with some software magic you could change the years to 2012 and 2013 or create your own if you can find the time!).NYE-BINGO-by-HHH2

3. Garland - every celebration could use a garland and new year’s is no exception. Amanda Formaro has a step-by-step post on how to make this gorgeous felt and sequinned new year’s garland at Kaboose.com. We have supplies of both so I am putting this on our to-do list. 4.Edible Party Horns - adorable, delicious and easy to make. What’s not to love about these edible party horns from Cooking With My Kid. Kids will love making (and eating) these! nye-horns

5. Glitter Fireworks - last year we made some new year’s eve fireworks with black card/construction paper, glue sticks and glitter. It was before the blog got started so there is no link but if you would like some instructions enchanted learning have done the same thing.New Year's Eve Fireworks with Mudpies and Sunshine

6. Make crazy photos with sparklers! It’s so hard to get a good clear photo when kids are moving – so don’t! Hand the camera over to the kids and let them take pictures and marvel at all the COOL designs made when sparklers are swished around. Do it when it gets dark – it’s heaps more fun! This is one of our photos from last year:)Jan 2012 032

7. Puffy Fireworks – inspired by some amazing puffy paint over at Inner Child Fun we made our own shooting star art for new year’s last year. The photos are inspired by the amazing firework star displays over Sydney Harbour Bridge that takes place every new year’s eve. Puffy Fireworks New Years Eve - Mudpies and Sunshine

8. Kids must have noise makers on new year’s and I love these over at Make and Takes. Using everyday items and allowing kids to be creative with decorating is such a great idea. We hope to make these too. MakeandTakes New Years Eve Noise Makers

9. Collage - I love a boredom buster unplanned craft where you just pull everything out of the craft box and let the kids go for it. This new year’s collage from the activity village is just that. I love it and we will definately be doing it. My kids love these types of craft the most. Activity Village New Year's Collage

10. Counting down by popping balloons! This is a clever idea from the folks at HowDoesShe. Each balloon has the hour on it and inside are the activities planned for that hour. Here are some of the activities they had planned waaaaaay back in 2009:

  1. ‘Paint’ with shaving cream
  2. Have a snowball fight
  3. Eat a cookie
  4. Ready a story in front of the fireplace
  5. Have a thumb war
  6. Sing a song
  7. Clean the bedroom (ya have to have one chore in there)
  8. Balloon Volleyball
  9. Drink hot chocolate with marshmallows.  YUM.
  10. Call Grandma and wish her Happy New Years!
  11. Turn on the music and dance like it’s 1999
  12. Tell a favorite memory from 2010

11. Love this idea from the ladies at Hostess with the Mostess. A party hat decorating station. So cute – just another beautiful idea I want to try!  The decorating station was set up for a birthday party but as I have seen elsewhere their post has inspired new years eve hat decorating fun as well! Thanks ladies :)  Party Hat Decorating from Hostess with the Mostess Blog

12. Party Poppers – we love Christmas crackers around here or party poppers/bon bons and why not extend that tradition to New Year’s Eve? Over at Little Birdie Secrets there is a gorgeous tutorial on how to make your party poppers which would be perfect for the big countdown.party popper by LittleBirdieSecretsI hope you are inspired to incorporate some DIY craft fun in to your New Year’s Eve. I also have a huge round up of news year’s craft ideas over at pinterest. If are featured and would like to grab a Mudpies and Sunshine button you will find them here. Last Minute Candy Canes

It’s Christmas Eve already and we’re busy bees here today. We’re almost ready for tomorrow – a few last minute jobs to do, beds ready for guests, some presents to wrap, children to clean :)

Any time for kids craft?  You would think not but the candy cane below is so quick, simple and delicious –  the kids will love it. And it will keep them busy for a while! ImageWhat to use:Any red or white food. It all depends on if you are aiming for a healthy snack, a sweet treat or a mixture of both.

We used white marshmallows (you could use bananas or white chocolate) with red jelly, cherry tomatoes and red grapes. Strawberries and watermelon would be wonderful too. Image

Grapes and marshmallows…Image

I used a measuring teaspoon to try and get a round circle of jelly. Jelly didn’t really respond but the kids didn’t seem to care.ImageHere is the result before I let the children at it! Image

It was lots of fun and so easy to do.

We have one last activity to do that I will be blogging about. A centrepiece for our Christmas table. We have to finish it today!

I hope you are  all enjoying the countdown to Christmas with your excited little ones.

Thanks so much for dropping by!

Creating with Eye Droppers

We were supposed to be using eye droppers and green coloured water to create some green paper…however Zoe had arrived at the craft site before I had finished setting up and she decided that dropping the water straight onto the aluminum foil was cool fun and the craft du jour.

Simple coloured water designs - Mudpies and Sunshine 059I also gave the water a Christmas touch by adding peppermint essence. As soon as the girls smelt it they said “ooh it smells like candy canes!”.

Simple coloured water designs - Mudpies and Sunshine 062After a while Zoe declared she had created “the world”.

Simple coloured water designs - Mudpies and Sunshine 089Ebony didn’t want to miss out on all the fun so I set her up with scented red water…

Simple coloured water designs - Mudpies and Sunshine 104Ebony spent 20 minutes having fun with her red water and foil tray. She is making a candy cane here.

So simple and easy to set up – and it was all Zoe’s idea! Such a great little activity to fit in between all the last minute chaos of christmas. Something with no prescribed outcome or rules. Just gentle play and as it happened, lots of quiet concentration.

If you try this out, please leave me a little comment as I would love to hear all about it.

Christmas Cookies

Christmas baking is always on our christmas agenda and this year both girls have asked to make biscuits to share with us and their grandparents on Christmas Day.

Ebony has already made crunchy chocolate biscuits all by herself. Our elf on the shelf got into the biscuit barrell and took a bite the other night – naughty Bimmy!

Zoe wanted to make the biscuit recipe she found in a Christmas activity book that a close family friend (thanks Ann!) bought her. It’s called “The Night before Christmas Sticker and Activity Book” published by Hinkler Books.

Here is the recipe:

CHRISTMAS COOKIES

Ingredients

  • 1 cup icing sugar, sieved
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 cup or 225g/8oz butter, cut into cubes
  • 31/2 cups or 350g/14oz plain flour, sieved

To decorate

  • 250g, 10oz or 2 cups of icing sugar, sieved
  • Edible gold and silver balls (we had none and used sprinkles)
  • Food colouring

Method

  • Line two baking trays with non-stick baking paper
  • Put the icing sugar, vanilla extract, egg yolk and butter into a mixing bowl and beat together until the mixture is smooth.
  • Add the flour and mix to a firm dough (we had to add a teeny amount of water)
  • Shape the dough into two flat discs and wrap in cling film. Put them into the refrigerator for 20 to 30 mins.
  • Preheat the oven to 375F, 190C or Gas Mark 5.
  • Roll the dough on a lightly-floured surface, until one finger thick.
  • Press out your Christmas shapes using your cutters.
  • Place on baking trays and bake for 10-12 minutes until lightly golden.
  • Put the cookies onto a wire rack to cool.
  • Mix the icing sugar with a few drops of cold water and food colouring to make a thick, but still runny icing.
  • Spread the icing over the cooled biscuits and decorate!

Zoe could not wait to get started. She measured out the butter, chopped it into cubes and then…totally freaked out using the electric beaters, poor thing. The butter was still too hard and it felt like she couldn’t control it. I had to share this photo as it shows just how tough life can be for kids in the first world ;)

Christmas Cookies with Mudpies and Sunshine 006

This recipe is great for encouraging or helping to establish perserverance in young children. Really, I’m serious! There are so many steps to this recipe, including an agonising 30 minute wait while the dough firms up in the fridge.  But with eating and decorating an absolute given it seemed Zoe could have waited a decade. Zoe’s smile returned for the sifting.Christmas Cookies with Mudpies and Sunshine 007

Here are some out of the oven and the activity book recipe:)

Once all the cookies were cooked and cooled we got on with the business of decorating. I think the pictures tell the story here.

Christmas Cookies with Mudpies and Sunshine 046

Christmas Cookies with Mudpies and Sunshine 057Christmas Cookies with Mudpies and Sunshine 062The fun of decorating is not to be understated. Ebony asked if she could join in and Zoe was happy to say ‘yes’. I didn’t say a word about what type/style/method/colours and I didn’t need to. Zoe wanted red and green (we used pink instead of red) icing and then she went on her merry (christmas) way. By the way – you can’t have too many sprinkles!!

Yummy Christmas Cookies with Mudpies and SunshineZoe let me have one and they are delicious, almost like shortbread.

Another tradition we have is watching Mr Bean’s Christmas movie every year. The girls love it and it is quite a short movie at under 30 minutes so good for tired nights. Here is the youtube link:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGh64aODJQ0

Thanks for dropping by. I’m so pleased you could visit :)

Fun Foam Bookmark Gifts

We love a handmade gift around here. I have always encouraged the girls to make presents for each other instead of buying them. So far, so good :) In case you missed it, Ebony made these adorable little creatures for Zoe this year. Now it was Zoe’s turn to make something for Ebony.

We used:

  • foam sheets
  • glitter stickers
  • waxed cotton thread
  • wooden beads

Image

I had foam leftover from making the christmas themed bath activity and couldn’t wait to use it again.

We hid Zoe away from Ebony and she quickly got to work. She decided Ebony would love three bookmarks.

Image

Image

The bead work gave her some threading and knotting to do.Image

Zoe LOVED choosing the bead colours. She also constantly enjoyed yelling out to Ebony “not to come in!!”.

Zoe was very proud of her creations, reinforcing the idea that gifts do not need to be shop bought. The feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment at making a beautiful present was evident as well. Do we remember to brush hair around here? Not much it seems :)

Image

Ebony will love these bookmarks – she is a huge bookworm and will love that they were made especially for her by little sis.

Wrapping and Giving

The Gift of Giving

Like many other parents I want to raise my girls to be compassionate. I want to open their eyes to the differences in the world and for them to understand how very, very lucky they are. So this year we are giving wrapped gifts to the Salvation Army to distribute to families with young children. We are also giving some of the gifts to the local hospital on Christmas Eve – for the children who come into the hospital over Christmas or who are already there.

Wrapping Station

It was going to be a long job, we had lots of presents to wrap. I know the girls have found wrapping presents fiddly and frustrating in the past so I wanted the wrapping ‘station’ to look inviting! Hence the rugs and the tinsel :) As for the gifts: we had sweet little animal finger puppets; pirate and princess writing slates; felt tiara decorating kits; bead necklace kits and velcro bracelets. Things to keep little hands and minds busy and small enough to carry around.

Wrapping Presents with Mudpies and Sunshine 013

It was the afternoon after the last day of school so I was pleasantly surprised at how enthusiastic and energetic the girls were. They really wanted to do it all themselves. Zoe wanted tips on how to hold the folded paper in place and remove a piece of sticky tape at the same time. Lots of fine motor skills called on for this job.

Wrapping Presents with Mudpies and Sunshine 024

On an emotional level, I saw how useful and helpful the girls felt. It is hard for children to know about other people in the world struggling and not be able to do anything about it. Wrapping and giving the presents made them feel like they have taken action. The only negative talk was the frustration of not being good at something as quickly as you would like ie. wrapping neatly like grown-ups. Ah it is always so satisfying when I can give the girls the chance to struggle through something on their own – and then see them come out the other side through their own efforts.

Wrapping Presents with Mudpies and Sunshine 062

Ebony was really happy with how much her wrapping improved in this one wrapping session. She was worried the recipients would be unimpressed with her wrapping. I asked her if she has ever worried or judged the wrapping style of presents she has received? She only had to give that question a second’s thought. Problem solved!

Wrapping Presents with Mudpies and Sunshine 067

Ebony liked being in charge of the cutting. It didn’t last though – Zoe loves cutting too, although she did find the large rolls quite hard work and handed the big scissors back to her big sister.

Wrapping Presents with Mudpies and Sunshine 079

We separated the presents into piles for girls and boys. Later on Zoe stuck pink star stickers on the girls presents and blue star stickers on the presents for boys. See the little round present on the top of the table? That is Zoe’s creation. It is wrapping paper scrunched up like a ball. She said “I think a little boy would like this to throw around”.

Wrapping Presents with Mudpies and Sunshine 102

The Good Stuff

Ebony said that wrapping the presents was the best thing to do after the last day of school and she gave me a hug. Zoe wanted to do more wrapping after we had finished and asked if this was enough for all the kids who need presents? I think we will make this a ‘last day of school’ tradition.  We took half of the presents and some non-perishable food to the local Salvo Army centre yesterday. The people there were great with the girls and told them the presents would make lots of children smile this Christmas. They feel like they are making a difference and they are. Every little bit helps.

Now they are excited about our hospital delivery scheduled for Christmas Eve. For obvious reasons we are giving the presents to the admissions staff to distribute as they see fit.  We can’t wait.
